2018 Surving vs. THRIVING

Thanks for visiting!  With a new year brings hopeful thoughts of what the year can bring, things to finally finish, stop doing, start doing, and much more.  I went to my first "Vision Board" party last week and it got me thinking.

As I made a list of what I want- some were consumer based (new desk chair, more passport stamps, fruit trees); some were personal growth (increase in faith, reading more, reenergized in my day job, doing more writing);  future focus (savings goals, living simpler, more time with family & friends); and health based (drinking more water, running a 5K, noticeable improvement to my overall health beyond the scale) I feel optimistic and welcome 2018.

I feel this year I have a better "head start" then in years past with starting my day off right.  For the last three months,  within the first 30 minutes I have taken three premium nutrition products known as the Thrive Experience by Le-Vel.   Thrive caught my eye when I saw a Facebook about having "all day energy" and it called to me.

Looking at my list above and the start of my vision board- think I've got this!  2018 has big things coming and I am ready!

For more information about Thrive- check out my page and feel free to shoot me some questions!

43 Life to DOs- a reminder from the past

While continuing on my path to decluttering my home, I came across this little gem:

It is titled 43 Life to dos and was handwritten.  Although I didn't date the paper, I could tell approximately how old it is. I am guessing it was written in 2007 to early 2008 range. I had read somewhere that everyone should make a list of 43 things to do in life. I started that list and first got stalled at number 30 (written in pencil) and ended up adding seven more later (in pen) for a total of 37 out of 43 blanks filled in.

Reading through this list I am pretty proud of just how many I have actually accomplished but I realize my list now would be a little different and maybe I would have a chance to get to 43.

My list:

Learn to make soft baked pretzels
Ride in a high air balloon
See Washington DC 2009 & 2015
Visit New York City 2010
Cook theme dinner party for six or more
Travel to Europe again 2008
Disneyland California 2011
Get motorcycle license
See Hawaii! 2009
Have home with whirlpool tub
Grow fruit trees in my yard
Pay off student loans 2012
Have a strawberry patch (I would now add asparagus or rhubarb too)
Alaskan cruise 2014
Learn to play golf
See New Orleans during Mardi Gras
Learn to decorate cakes 2007
Be part of a protest or right March
Plant awesome flower garden
Travel by train
Build a piece of wood furniture (wooden shelf for Kelli) 2016
Get better at pool
Laser eye surgery
Road trip with sisters (Seattle w: Lauren and Chrystal 2012) and upcoming for Chrystal's wedding Aug 2016 :)
Get mom on a cruise
Own rental property 2015
Fish in the ocean (Miami) 2014
See a volcano-2009, glacier-2014, or rain forest 2011
See whales 2009 or dolphins in the ocean
Ride in a helicopter
Have a baby 2012 & 2015
Continue with classes (Masters degree 2011)
Take a belly dancing class
Have a booth at the farmers market or craft show
Snuba or scuba diving
Own a hybrid car
Go to a charity ball

I have added dates to my completed items- I was surprised to see 16 of them completed! Not to bad for writing the list nearly 10ish years ago and not seeing it again until now!

I am not sure if I could get to 43 now but know could fill in a couple more blanks:

Visit a new culture
Volunteer more
Have a special tradition with my boys
Do a big selfless act for someone else
Max out my TSP account for the year
Learn to make sushi- have a dinner
Be better about recycling

Well-that was easier than I thought! If the list was places to see, you couldn't stop me at 43!

What's on your list? Can you get to 43?

Thanks for stopping by!

My here and now: a list of I WANT...

I am trying to be able to do more in my life- have more time for the things I love.  I spend to much time cleaning, picking up, and running around. I hate it, I get mad at others when it seems like it is all I get done but don't get any help. I have read a couple of things lately regarding this that have hit close to home and I am working on making some changes.

I have removed a lot from my house: empty boxes from items currently in use, owners manuals, broken items, and have moved onto weeding out excess.  There is so much more to go but I already feel better.  I am in love with the shows on TV focusing on Tiny Homes.  While I don't ever think I will  be that minimalistic- it puts a little fire under me!

The first week in August there is 100 miles of garage sales near our house and boy have I got a pile started.  It is hard to put things aside that I might use later and pains me to see the money I spent on things just cause it was once a good deal.  I am trying to be better,  I have to be better.

I want to experience more and collect less.

I want nicer essentials rather than a lot of random things.

I want to be less stressed.

I want the time to enjoy my little family in the present.

I want more girlfriend time.

I want to be happier overall.

I want to be healthier.

I want to make more progress and it starts here- writing it down, saying it to the world so thanks for listening.

And here comes April....

April is set to be crazy with a ton of family birthdays including my husbands, my mom, a sister, a brother in law, and several littles in our lives; a seven year wedding anniversary; Easter; and a new BABY!

With that there is a lot of prep going on around here and I am finally starting to make progress!

I have snuck in our last family of three photos (maternity shots too):

Ordered my hubs birthday ice cream cake to be sitting in our freezer 10 days ahead of time.

I have gotten 8 freezer meals prepped and ready for quick cooking post baby.  I have a goal of 10 so two more to go!  Thankfully the fresh fruits/veggies will be in season soon so easy meals of roasted veggies and grilled meats will also fill up a lot of meals...BLT and sweet corn season here we come!

This past weekend we headed to Omaha, NE (2 hours west), we spent the night in a hotel, went to the Omaha Zoo, saw three different siblings with their spouses/families, ate a lot of good food, and became godparents to two of my besties littles!  It was an action packed 30 hours and lead to a great night sleep last night!

Big brother's Easter basket has been put together and in hiding since last month.  And the trip to the Easter bunny was a lot more successful than last year:

Five on Friday

Five on Friday

Hello!  New Years Five on Friday addition.  Here are five things I am looking forward to this year:

1.  Baby Goeser #2 due 4/21/2015!  We are keeping the baby's gender  a surprise so getting to know what our family will look like is like the prize at the end of the rainbow.

2.  Seeing this little boy become a loving big brother.  He is so loving already, I can't wait to see what he will do to help this baby!

3.  Time off...I am super blessed and a leave hoarder so I get to soak up 16 weeks with my little ones once the new baby gets here (at 2/3 pay though)!  There are so many fun summer activities that I am dreaming of sitting here in the -15 wind chills at the moment.

4.   Not to rush this year but I am looking forward to next years winter holidays!  Grant will better understand the Santa thing and sibling photos with holiday decor are just too cute.

5.   Soaking up some date nights with the husband.  The past couple months have been hectic and now that things are slowing down, I think it is time for some alone time.

Not to bad, only eight days into the year and I am already thinking of the greatness that this year holds.  I hope your year looks just as bright!

Potty training lessons learned from my boy

Being three weeks into my first born's potty training experience, I wanted to record a couple of things that I have learned so far.

1.  You will spend a lot of time looking at a half naked little man. So you have been changing his diapers since birth but it goes to a new level.  You will find yourself in a stare down with those little "boy bits" hoping/praying for something to happen.

2.   You will get familiar with collecting wet clothes in plastic bags like this:

3.    You will always leave your bathroom light on to save on time, especially once they get the hang of getting to the bathroom and pulling time their pants.

4.    You will need extra pants/shorts.  I find myself not having enough although I have the same number of bottoms that I had always had! Daycare needs two extra sets of clothes at all times, backup in the car, the diaper bag, and the gym bag which takes 5 pairs out of commission over here before daily use comes into play. (The same goes for underwear!)

5.     Boy bits need to be pointed down...this should be self explanatory but I end up with dry pants getting sprayed down the back while using the toilet.  Also movement of the person on the potty may cause misalignment for the second flow of pee.

6.    Crying "potty" will be used as a form of "I can get immediate attention!"

7.    You will need to safe guard some of your hard to clean daily use items.  We still use a high chair with our little one, it keeps him focused on eating instead of trying to get away three bites into the meal.  This becomes a pain in the ass when there was an accident.  I spent two hours taking apart our Space Saving Fisher Price highchair, washing the straps, removing the pee smell, and putting it back together-TWICE.  The highchair is still not the same slightly reclining more than usual.  I put a layer of press and seal down now with the cover on top of it.  Also they make a thing called a piddle pad that we are using to safe guard the car seat!

8.    We started with a seat that goes on the potty, this made it nearly impossible (especially without a constant "pee-pee" stare down to see if anything actually came out since there was not enough urine to see in the big bowl.  We switched to a small frog potty that needed to be dumped and it was more visible to us all that something happened.

9.    Moveable potty chairs can mean little butts try to scoot around on them, not good when liquids are involved!

10.   No matter what potty- big or small is used, boys need a splash guard.  Our toilet insert had a small hump in the front that did nothing resulting in more sprayed urine down the back pants.

11.    Get some flushable wipes.  We tried toilet paper and found wipes where much easier but didn't like them stinking up the small trash or want to risk flushing them.

12.    My husband hates when I call Grant's underwear panties....

13.    Check the weight on the underwear packs!  I got the 2T/3T size thinking they would last a while but when I went to throw away the empty pack, the weight only went to 34 lbs.  Grant is 2.5 yrs and weighes 31 lbs already.  If you are unsure of the size, find a place that sells single pairs to test it out first. Size fours don't look overly big on him especially washed and dried!

14.   Parents of boys can expect to pay more for the same number or less underwear than girl panties.    I find that girls' underwear comes in packs with 2-4 more pairs then the boys for the same cost. (We found an eight pack at Sam's Club for $10, the best price I have found with various characters.

15.   On our second day in underwear, I was lucky enough to find skidmarks.  I was shocked, I wiped the boy cleaned- it took me long enough so I know he was clean but there was still a skidmark in his underwear!  If you didn't already, buy the refillable bottle of spray & wash get comfortable!

I am joining in with the virtual fun of the Holiday Link Up party Christmas 2014 edition!

I love seeing all the holiday pjs out there and must confess that this pjs rotate out via size rather than season!

Our second baby announcement

There are so many baby announcement photos out there and it was hard to decide on one to use so here is what I put together:

The first one we put on Facebook and the middle one was taken on our last vacation.  I used the middle one to send to co-workers saying "my boss gave me next summer off..well, she kind of had to..."

The last one is more of a look and see...we did a thinking announcement the first time around and I used it to show our family.

The season was perfect to use the pumpkins so in the end it won out!

Our Nursery

have been working at turning our nursery into a more appropriate room for our growing 18 month old toddler.  I decided to make a couple changes in room set up and wanted to take a moment to share the nursery we put together two years ago!

Since we didn’t plan on finding out the baby’s gender, the traditional blue or pink would not work.  I have always LOVED bright colors and had our wedding colors in Bright Pink (Raspberry), Blue, and Yellow with accents of Lime Green, Purple, and Orange.

Having a baby wasn’t about to flex my favorite bright color pallet to Pastels!

I found the lime green tree (on the dresser) on clearance and I thought it would pair well with orange.  And later down the road, we could add bright blue or pink!

We painted the walls washable white (from builder’s grade flat beige) and brought in a used crib and changing table.  I wanted a signature piece and comfortable glider chair to round out the furniture.

The dresser was from my mom and dad’s room in the house I grew up in.  It wasn’t pretty to start but I made it work- filling in cracks and painting it orange for an accent piece.  We waited until the baby was born to add the blue accent pulls at the top.

The glider was my big purchase at $300 but it was my one and only true spurge of the room.  Once a big boy bed goes in, the chair will fit in with the living room or family room.

Many other décor pieces were added to make it how it is pictured here.  Sisters, friends, and I contributed to the wall hangings with several homemade items- strongly inspired by Pineterst…

I was thrilled in how the room came together and never looked back from that old office/guest room it once was!

I have a good couple hours organizing and packing away baby items before I share the end results of our toddler room makeover but we love it already!

Holiday Cheer in the Blogoshere: O Christmas Tree

I am a little late joining this link up for showing off our 2013 Christmas but I am pretty proud of it.   Normally our tree is covered with black,  silver, and white ornaments but then I thought of our toddler throwing those breakable ornaments like toys.

I had to find something that was toddler friendly and the word "shatterproof" spoke to me during my trip to Hobby Lobby.  I decided that I could spend no more than $15 to refresh our toddler safe 2013 since we already had so much nice (but very breakable) Christmas ornaments already.

I after circling each of the Christmas aisles three times I picked out a bright blue/greenish hue to add to my silver.  I spent $4 for a new base sheet cover, $5 on ribbon to make the bow the spiral down the tree, and $6 on two boxes of mini Christmas bulbs with 18 bulbs each.

I was pretty proud of myself:

I laugh at my improve skills in trying to find something to lift the tree higher off the ground, what do you think?

Yep, those are full diaper boxes, taped together, and then the tree base taped to it too.  It isn't going anywhere on my watch!  It works for me and after Christmas I may talk myself into a clearance taller tree.

Thanks for stopping by, Holland

Christmas Pj Party

What's cuter than all holiday pjs in the stores? Seeing them on our little minis! Today I am liking up with the Christmas pajama party.

We decorated our tree in our Christmas pjs:

I think he actually smiled because I let him stand on a chair for once....

We have a couple other pairs but haven't caught them on camera yet; we also snagged a cute pair for next year!  Again Wal-Mart $5.88 for some cute ones ranging from newborn to 5T!

Holiday Cheer in the Blogoshere: Merry Mantel

Today is the first of the Christmas Link-Ups that I will be participating in and the subject is Merry Mantels.

Our fireplace and mantel sit directly below the TV so we I don't have the option of switching in a seasonal print or mirror..well I could cover the TV but I am pretty sure the hubs wouldn't stand for it!  I make do with what I have and so I present our  2013 Mantel:

A stocking for each of us with our initials, the "G" stocking hanger for our last name, some beads, with a couple of extra large silver ornaments.  I added some black metal trees from Target a couple years back.

The last several years our tree has been silver and black but I inserted a turquoise this year and have yet to find a stocking I like to replace the middle red stocking.  When I do, I will insert an updated photo.

Happy holiday decorating and season to all!

Why can't a girl get a free "who-ha" exam, it's bad enough I shouldn't have to pay too!

Twice this week I have had questions regarding an amount a doctor visit costed me and I not only spoke up twice but was right both times!

Insurance is very confusing and with Obamacare forcing some healthcare changes (won't say my beliefs on good or bad...) it won't be getting any easier.  I chose many times to go green and get electronic statements but when I had the option for my health insurance explanation of benefits papers (EOB) I declined.  I want to physically hold in my hand what was charged to insurance and what it is going to cost me.  I know I can look them up online but I wouldn't do it every time nor keep track of the whole family's appointments to look it up after each visit.  The paper versions are my best option.

I worked in Human Resources next to the benefits lady for six years and I thought I knew my plan well.  I was shocked to be told I owed $35 for a Pap smear/ women's exam.  I questioned it there at the office but was told otherwise.  It didn't sit well so today I got out my insurance book and found my answer: "pay nothing for an annual physical and covered preventive screenings."  Well I would say I went in for the exam as a preventive measure- it sure as hell wasn't for fun.

I called the office back and after explaining and reading the some sentence to the lady four times, I was told that I would have a $35 credit on my account.  The second time was a different bill that was $21 more than normal.

My lesson to share is don't be afraid to second guess charges, if it doesn't sit right look it up, call your insurance, and/or ask for someone else to help you- it just might save you money or get you better educated on your benefits!

Good-bye old friend...RIP pacifiers

As I sit hear writing this, my little one is screaming in his crib.  He missed his last nap and if that alone wasn't hard enough it is night number two without his pacifier.

Grant hasn't gotten his pacifier outside the crib or car seat (longer trips) since he was 11 months.  I wanted to pull the paci at one year but it didn't happen.  I was weak...and I gave in.  He isn't sleeping with with pacifier all night long just to calm down enough to fall asleep.  He will get in the crib and search for his paci, once he found it he would pop it in his mouth and lay peacefully.

Greg and I talked about how hard it was going to be to get rid of and on the two hour drive home from Thanksgiving yesterday, I cut off the tip of his paci.  We gave it to him and watched him twist the thing around in his mouth, trying to make it fit right for 40 minutes.  It was pretty cute...I couldn't help spy on him in the mirror taking it in and out, staring at it, and twisting it around.  He cried some and fell asleep with the broken one hanging out of his mouth.

Nap time yesterday was hard too. Fifteen minutes of crying and consoling to lay back down eventually got us a two hour nap.  The first night routine was the same bath, bed, sippy, but no paci.  Grant cried for fifteen minutes than was silent for ten...we thought he went to sleep but we got ten more minutes of soft sobs with him laying down in the crib before he slept all night.

Day one over...not to bad....it still broke my heart to hear those cries but today I failed.  I had the opportunity to have Grant preoccupied when I dropped him off at daycare this morning and I took it.  I
set him down and he went over to a little baby that was crying and I left without saying bye, causing a scene, or needing his teacher to peel him off of my leg crying.

I had a plan to speak to the teacher about the no paci change and take what they had home with me....I forgot and it caused both Grant and I more pain.  He had two naps with a paci at daycare-so much for our progress yesterday!

Fast forward bedtime right now, he spent ten minutes crying before the hubs went in, calmed him down, rubbed his back, and gave him kisses.  My sister told us just to go cold turkey and hearing him cry is hard.  I want to run in and give him a paci but know it will be a distant memory soon enough.

The cries are louder now followed by a couple sheiks then nothing...28 minutes in now...

It's quiet now...I can't see any movement on the video monitor...hopefully this crying period will get shorter each sleep time and I can report back with some good news soon.

Thinking ahead- I'm not sure what to do in the car for longer trips, I swore I didn't want a video player but I completely understand it is probably just as good for the parents' sanity as the child!

Any suggestions welcome...

Happy December to all!

Five on Friday Thankful Addition

Happy Friday/Post Turkey Day/ Black Friday/ Holiday Season/and anything else I missed. . .

I see a lot of people did the listing of things their thankful for on Facebook one day at a time and here are just five of mine:

1) kiddos.  Holidays are a ton of fun with little ones around too but I mean having them and expecting them.  This past week one bestie had a baby boy and another shared her pregnacy news...it reminds me of how truly blessed we are to have them and love on the kiddos in our lives.  Most of us know at least one person that struggles with this and my heart goes out to them!

2) food.  I stumbled on the Scary Mommy Nation where you can apply to have assistance for your Thanksgiving meal or donate...reading those stories made me tear up. I am thankful that my family's biggest food delmia was which dessert to try first.  It is something I take for granted at times.

3) family. I love the calls, texts, and email planning for meeting up with family, what to bring, and what everyone is doing.  I love watching Grant play with everyone and when he is the center of attention (he is the youngest at the moment but Greg's side is having four new ones by the 2014 holidays so this is Grants year!)

4) time with friends.  Last week I was thinking that I never hear from or hear back from a good friend.  She works different hours and participates  in a lot of evening activities.  We traveled back to our hometown for Thanksgiving and went to the local bar for their famous Wednesday night tacos pre Thanksgiving.  Since no one really wants to cook the night before, this place is packed.  You share long tables with people who you vaguely remember their names and the food is great.  My friend, her husband, and parents were there!  We sat and talked for a couple hours and gave Grant to his grands then headed over to their house for board games.  We played a couple of different games and had a horrible loosing streak of guys verses girls Sequence losing 10/11 games bit had the best time (until 130am...)

5) having ways to avoid in person Black Friday shopping. The hubs and I passed by a Walmart on the way home and decided to stop in and see what they had at 630pm last night.  Parking was full into the field next door but we found a good space.  We walked in and there were no carts and lines further than we could see.  We did a look around the toy section and circled back out the door. It was madness!!!  I thankfully utilized the internet for Target, Walmart, HomeDepot, and Best Buy shopping either on Wednesday or between 130am and 3am on Thanksgiving morning (I was still up from meeting up with friends mentioned in number four!) My shopping hours may just be the early hours on Thanksgiving from now on...I got almost everything that I wanted plus  for few extra things I saw last minute!

Thanks for stopping,

Holland
